Change is *still* in the air: Report of the Week for Maps 2.0
Here’s a great report that is appropriate for the times in North America:
A couple of coworkers and myself decided to take advantage of the early voting offered in Florida on our day off. If you’ve seen the news reports, the lines were horrible, with wait times going several hours. Not how I wanted to spend my off day. Average wait times were updated throughout the day for polling spots online so we chose a couple of locations with the shortest times.
With a list of polling places downloaded from the net via the S60’s great browser, we were on our way! As my luck goes, the closest polling spot we chose had a line snaking around the back of the building. We grudgingly went to the end of the line and while my pals pouted about our anticipated 3 hour wait, I fired up Nokia Maps on my N95. I delegated calling some of the other poll spots to one of my pals to check on estimated wait times. We found a spot a few cities over in our county with less than an hour wait! Of course none of us knew where this spot was located so I plugged in the address to Nokia Maps and like magic, we had a route.
By now, we’d drawn the attention of a few of our fellow line jockeys. They were amazed at the speed that I could pull up an address and get turn by turn directions on my phone. I told them how I was an S60 Ambassador and how being an Ambassador allowed me to trial the voice navigation feature and how its been a tool I can’t be without after having tried it. I could feel my friends rolling their eyes as they are treated to my impromptu reviews about anything S60 if they sit still long enough.
I shared the route directions with a group of folks at the end of the line before we headed back to the car. We made it to the poll in Weston in minutes and even saw a couple of the folks we chatted with at the last poll that used my directions. They thanked me for saving them hours of time and commented on what a “cool little phone” I have. I told them about www.s60.com. Next upgrade, I told them they could compare S60 devices to get the features they want and need, instead of settling for what their carrier forces on them.
I love showing off my device’s features but this time it helped me and others perform our civic duty to our country by ensuring we could cast our vote in a timely fashion.
Thanks scion9! Mike will be getting in touch with you to find our where to send your loaner E71. Enjoy!
