Nokia Search 4.0 download available for selected devices

Nokia S60 applications - October 30th, 2007 - Written by Tommi Vilkamo

Nokia_Search_4.jpg

The brand-new 4.0 version of Nokia’s Search application just became available for download for a number of handsets based on S60 3rd Edition FP1 (N76, N95, E51, 5700, 6110, 6121, 6290). Try it, it’s really good - I was especially impressed by the results that get updated while you are still typing your search term.

Steve Litchfield adds an important note:

Installation note: you’ll have to go into App Mgr and delete EVERY instance of ‘Search’ - if your N95 is like mine, there will be several entries! After this, Search v4 will finally install 8-)

The same thing happened to me. Couldn’t install the new version 4.0 before uninstalling all the old Search related items using the Application Manager. But now it works like a charm.

Nothing for S60 3.0 devices yet?!?

No. I don’t know, but I’m guessing that this new Search app might require some new enablers that became available in S60 3.1 (=S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1). This happens quite often when you want to push the limits of what an application can do.

even though it’s not for my e65 available yet, I would love an integration to search real live from your homescreen, as a todayscreen plugin!

Now, if only Nokia would start updating S60v3 devices to fp1…

    Holy usability, Batman!

That’s not a search tool, that’s a one-stop shop for everything in your phone. And it’s fast!

    Me likes.

I can only hope that people fall in love with this application as much as I did when I first played with it at the Nokia Go Play event. I use it on a daily basis with my Nokia N81, just installed it on my N95 and I’m sad that all the 3.0 users will not be able to experience this.

    Nick,

in what dreams do you believe that it would be in Nokia’s interest to upgrade your old (>12 months) device to new features like FP1? The entire business model of Nokia is based on outdating your device as soon as possible. Upgrading certainly is standing in the way there. You can see this already that application software like Map2Go and MailForExchange aren’t supported anymore on ‘old’ phones like N80. Now here we have a search application which certainly uses advanced features of FP1 to do search. You may believe this (or not).

It is a fantastic application. Like Lasse said, it can find anything in your phone in a timely manner. Nice touch with the thumbnail preview of pictures.

Search tool performs very well on my 6110 navi.
BTW Tommi, where are the videos from last week CTO’s presentation?

    hmm :-(
go and make this application for S60 V3.0..

wooo, spotlight for my phone! now please! make it integrated in the standby likw in the n76, s60 really needs to change it’s architecture regarding the stand by screen…

Feature Request: Make a text box available on the active screen so I can start typing in said text field and some pretty bling transition goes into the search app and off I go.

I don’t like the way you currently launch it via the active standby plugin on the N76/81/N95_8GB.

    What about E90 ?

  14. Ricky Cadden wrote

    +1 for Stefan’s request.

However, personally, I’m not sure I understand the draw of this. I’ve had it on the N81 8GB for a week or so now, and I have to admit, I’ve used it *maybe* once or twice. Without Google Local (or ANY Local search for the US, for that matter), it’s usability is extremely limited, as is the search my phone function, imo.

However, big ups to the Beta Labs for bringing more features to more phones. Just cause it doesnt work for me doesn’t mean it won’t change someone else’s life.

  15. Tommi Vilkamo wrote

Just to clarify, Beta Labs had nothing to do with this launch - I just wrote a quick post about it, as I thought you might be interested.

For the future, though, I need to have a chat with the search team and see if there are ways we could do closer cooperation…

nice sleek application… had nothing to search, so I uninstalled it ;-(

Hey this is the speed applications on mobile phones should run! Some improvements come to mind on my first go (non-automatic installation, some extra layers of menus, items are sorted according to who knows what logic) but this is really great and i will make it one of my active-screen applications straight away! Thanks for the tip Tommi!

  18. mace wrote

Oh i wish Lifeblog -data was searched too and the bookmarks would exclude automatic bookmarks set by the S60 browser. No intention to whine, this is certainly the kind of thing we need. This and Online Sharing application are really welcome and (despite a few suggestions) quality software both of them. Greatness!

  19. Darla wrote

Definitely agree that it should be available on the active standby screen. And also, adding Lifeblog to that would be a plus, for those of us who use it frequently. :)

    Hi,
Could someone help me to install this application?
Whenever I try to remove the previous Search app ti keeps on saying “unable to delete file”. What can I do to remove the previous Search files?

  21. Darla wrote

    @Ricky,

Which version of the app did you install? Yahoo and Windows Live Search for the US is available.

  22. alsiladka wrote

Atleast update the v3 app to add as many features as possible!!

  23. Duncan Sample wrote

I presume by ‘Uninstall from app manager first’ it means the search app and Search-localplugin… packages also? I have tons of Search-localplugins listed in App Manager.

  24. Duncan Sample wrote

@Tommi - Any chance of a new App Manager being made in Betalabs? The current version on my N95 is horrendously slow and tedious when wanting to ‘manage’ several applications at the same time.

  25. Venemo wrote

It’s great, but I’d be more happy if it had the feature like the N95 8GB, which shows search on the standby screen. Is it possible for the original N95?

  26. NickP wrote

Any chance we will see this for the business e-series email phones like the e61i?

  27. Shahryar wrote

some people are saying this isn’t really usable in these comments.. I’m about to try it out though. I was just talking to my friend’s wife online right now and she said she was going to get a new mac once her birthday rolls around. I tried frantically to search for her bday in my phone’s calendar but couldn’t find it. This search could have saved the day.

  28. Duncan Sample wrote

@Tommi, am I being dim, or is there no Local Search now? It definitely shows local search as a main feature on the site, but I can’t find it at all in the app (set to either UK or Finland). On the site it shows a lot of yellow pages sites being ‘providers’, however it doesn’t show yell.com or .co.uk there… have they stopped being a provider (they used to be the only local search for UK)?

It’s a shame, because it worked fine in the old app, and that was all I ever used Search for.

Makes all third party themes crash on my N95.

    I cannot uninstall Nokia Search v 2.0………
What is worst is that the search 2.0 doesn’t work either

  31. Ran wrote

I followed a suggestion on this board and deleted all “search” instances. Then, I installed the Search application on my N95. Installation completed successfully, but the “search” application appears nowhere, neither with the application nor on the menu window.
    How can activate it?
