Devicescape rocks

Tips and tricks - October 12th, 2007 - Written by Jukka Eklund

It was already a way back Devicescape announced they are supporting S60 but now I read it’s going to be bundled offering for Nokia Nseries and Eseries devices. It’s already available for download at Devicescape site. I’ve tried it briefly and it seems to rock!

So how does this relate to Mobile Web Server? Once you have it set up on your device, you can set up also Mobile Web Server to use it’s Internet access point and thus your MWS will always automatically use whatever WLAN network you have available. If you have one at work, possibly some free hotspots at city and one at home your mobsite will be accessible all the time without needing to use GPRS data that might be a cost issue if you don’t have a flat free plan.

I tried this very briefly so if you start to use it share your experiences! Also there might be other similar solutions available, let us know if you have tried something and it worked.

Thanks for the info. Nice Programm.
If this would work with Hidden SSID it would be perfect.

this is a really nice concept! unfortunately I can’t find a page where they list the available hotspots. I live in the Netherlands (Amsterdam) and I’m wondering if the app’s useful for me. Can anyone tell me if it is and if there’s some kind of ‘network range list’ available?

    Tnx and greetz,

@Eismaus: I guess it needs a visible SSID to do the connecting automatically.

@jeroen: I think you need to be a member, then there is a list available.

    Jukka,

Sounds really cool! What happens when you loose Wifi coverage and regain the same or another again later on. Does the Mobile Web Server have to be restarted?

    Cheers,
    Martin

@Martin: no MWS needn’t to be re-started (at least not with one WLAN network). It’s the same as in regular WLAN AP: once the connection is back up also MWS goes back online. In FON’s case there is an annoying certificate warning displayed however so it’s not completely automatic.

@Jukka: very nice, thanks for the pointer. Still, the ‘ultimate’ virtual access point will need to embrace the carrier data networks as well…

@PaulC: S60 3rd Edition, FP2 has IAP groups that can contain any kind of connectivity ie. WLAN and GPRS. That and Devicescape combined might solve many troubles..
