Backing up web server data

Tips and tricks - October 15th, 2007 - Written by Jukka Eklund

Want to do a fresh installation of Mobile Web Server and still keep all the configurations, content etc. you have got in the site? It’s possible and not even too difficult. Read on to the steps..

1. Find the folder named Web server with File manager or Nokia Phone Browser, it will be either in C:/Data (device memory) or E:/Data (memory card or mass memory).
2. Copy the /Web server/Data folder to somewhere safe (in phone, memory card or to PC).
3. Also copy the files groups.txt and passwords.txt from the folder /Web server/conf.
4. If you have added or changed files under htdocs folder (such as CSS or static HTML), copy those files also. If you don’t know what that last sentence meant, you can just skip this step.
5. Install the new version or re-install the old one.
6. Now copy the folder /Web server/Data back to phone (either C:/Data/Web server or E:/Data/Web server) overwriting the existing one. This folder contains the database files holding configuration and web content (such as blog or guestbook entries). Likewise copy the files groups.txt and passwords.txt back.
7. (Skip also this step if you skipped step 3). If you had changed or added files under /Web server/htdocs folder copy them back to where they were.
8. Start Mobile Web Server and all of your stuff should be right where it was before.

Was this helpful? If yes, don’t worry and be happy. If not, let me and other readers know!

This is unrelated to day’s topic: I’m wondering why the gallery resizes the pix I publish. I’ve tried out different sizes but even the 320×240 is rendered as pixel slush… Any ideas?

That looks weird. Which device do you have, did you take pics with device camera and which settings?

N95 device camera. I always use -sharpening, -contrast, then sharpen, resize, convert to black and white, publish to MWS - all from within the N95.

@Jussi: You said that gallery resizes your pics. If you open the image (from the list select one and after the “preview” open it again) it should be displayed as it is.

In Welcome page, Blog and Gallery preview pages we are showing the thumbnails from EXIF data instead of the real image to save bandwidth. It is not perfect solution, I agree. In Nseries devices the thumbnail has reasonable quality but in other S60 devices it’s too small. One other alternative, using the pre-shrinked hidden thumbnail files created by S60 gallery app, has the same problem. Image quality -wise it would be nice to create the thumbnails on the fly or make yet another thumbnail files and store those somewhere. Unfortunately the current processing power and memory size in the devices makes the first one unfeasible and having one more copy of every image would use more storage space per each taken image.

In Blog and Welcome page (where we have to store the thumbnail file into Data folder since the original may be deleted from S60 side) it should be possible to replace the automatically created thumbnail with better one. Just keep the filename same. I’m not claiming that it is in any way usable solution, but if it irritates you too much its possible anyway. We would very much like to display better quality images, but so far we are not aware of any perfect solution.

To conclude this rather long explanation with possible answer to your original question, it seems that editing images degrades the EXIF thumbnail quality. That might be the reason for seeing the images in bad quality even when you have N95.

I don’t think it’s entirely problem of exif data. After resizing and so forth, pictures do look fine within the Gallery application. It’s only after having published them that they turn into pixel soup. Do take a peek on my page, I’ve allowed anonymous traffic to the blog. My address: traskila.mymobilesite.net
