   Dunno.

   Well, the main purpose of publicly listed companies is to make money. Sometimes it makes sense to offer stuff for free (and make money indirectly), sometimes it’s better to charge from the stuff directly.

   I don’t know if there is any free (and good solution) around; Agile and IM+ which are the best mobile instant messengers are priced around 30 EUR AFAIK.

   I am confused by the 30-day pass.
   Windows Live Messenger is free to use on a PC and I cannot imagine Microsoft will start charging money
   to use it.
   Why would they charge money to use the mobile version?

   “Windows Live services are currently compatible with many Nokia devices.” after which only 5 models are listed.

   HIER is a free messenger client for S60 devices. it’s not as neat, but it works.

   as tommi says: “Well, the main purpose of publicly listed companies is to make money.” will nokia go the apple way and try to completely lock in users to their device? thus, being able to charge for something that otherwise would stand a good chance of being free of charge. in practice this difference likely means the difference between a free messenger client or being forced to pay a monthly fee, as nokia is now offering.

   personally, the n80ie is very likely the last nokia device i will be buying for a foreseeable future, and the same goes for the company i am working at.

   I’m not qualified to answer this question on behalf of Nokia. But if you want my personal opinion as a reasonably well-informed Nokia insider, I see no signs of this happening - quite the opposite.

    If indeed Windows or Nokia starts asking money for it Fring is still an absolut great app. (www.fring.com). The only thing is that you cannot use all the live apps.

    Compability “with many Nokia devices”. Ok, let’s see. As this is text based messaging, a qwerty keyboard would be nice, so the best phone for this application would then be E70, E90, E61, E62 or E61i.. But lo and behold! E-Series doesn’t seem to be supported at all, and its Download! application doesn’t list the Live Messenger. This is plain _stupid_, no matter what kind of business deal there is (was) between Multimedia and some other party, be it Microsoft or whatever.

    If the application is done properly, MORE effort would be needed to make it NOT work with E-Series, so there’s really no technical reason for this compatibility issue. It wouldn’t hurt if the application would be available via web either - obviously this isn’t the case thanks to some artificial reasons to limit the availability of the app to only a small number of devices.

    Good luck with this policy.

    I fully agree that E series phones - in particular the E70 - would be the ideal target for these application. It is a shame, that they are not officially available for the E70.

    That being said, there are ways - and they work fine on my E70.

    I’m recently find Talkonout. A free java based Jabber/Gtalk(and voip) client. It supports MSN, Yahoo, AOL and ICQ via jabber services. Unlike many java apps, you can send messages within chat window (realy important for IM).

    I’m using it mainly for gtalk and msn. It’s working properly on E61. But I think you should go with official msn client if you want a stable msn experience in long term.(due to protocol changes, third party msn clients always has some problems, especialy free ones.)

    i installed this on my e65 and it worked fine for about a week and then every time i tried to sigh in it started saying “messenger is not available right now. please try again later” now it has benn a week and it is still saying that/

    i would be thankful for any help.

    Alan: I don’t know, but the website http://europe.nokia.com/A4487157 says:

    “If you have problems with using any of the Windows Live services on your Nokia device, please turn to Microsoft’s official web site support at support.live.com”
