Gizmo for S60 just become available in Nokia Beta Labs.

Go try it. People tell me it’s really good.

This S60 client is related to the Gizmo project, a great service that gives us free calls etc. to any Gizmo Project, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, or Windows Live users.

Compatibility: at least N80 Internet Edition and N95, dunno about the other WLAN-enabled S60 devices.

    Moi Tommi,

Doesn’t yet seem to work on my E61. But I am determined to make it work.

It works on My N95 ..but sadly ..doesnt allow me to make calls over my GPRS/EDGE connection like fring does.Even though it uses the GPRS connection to log you in an update ur status. Check out my blog for an article on this.

I have an ‘old’ N80, too bad Voip only works on the N80i. Since the i fixes a hardware error in the normal N80 that prevents it from using software like this should i not in fact be eligible for a replacment N80i?

    Moika,
It works on my E70 3.x firmware fine! I have had a shockingly positive experience which I do not understand…

    About the setup:
It was a bit confusing in the beginning as I am using Truphone too, but I got it working after a few reboots.

Than I managed to call also. And than something happened what I do not understand… no, not a call from the future :-)… but something mysterious. :-) I will think about that and get back here later…

Tjis, there is no N80i but just a software variant called Internet edition. You should be able to update to “i” version your N80.

The N80i version works on E61 with 3.x firmware.

Yeah, I tried this for my N95 over the weekend - For some reason, it said my login details were incorrect. Tried it a good few times as well…

    Moi,

I got it working with the help of the commenter above mentioning the firmware upgrade.
    I made some notes here:

Thanks again Tommi for passing the information on.

@Aron: are you confused that it just worked? :D

  10. Aron wrote

    Hello,

Well I was confused that I could call a number without acctually having a “callout” account. As it turns out it let me call one number free. After that it is restricted and expects the ballance to be filled up.

It is much like the “free credit” from Truphone at the beginning. Once it is used you can “only” call the speciall offers from Truphone. Which are quite many free numbers for now…

The Gizmo prices seem to be a bit lower for some countries, but what is critical is, how much the presently free numbers will cost for Truphone after the 30th of June. Let’s wait and see.

I wonder about service providers restricting Gizmo as they did Truphone in “special offer” hand sets. Any chance of that happening?

At least I can feel safe from that, having a “non-operator” phone.

    Best Regards!
    Aron

    Hi Aron,

Gizmo is always free for SIP-to-SIP calls. But as with any other mainstream operator (I call Skype mainstream) they have to charge for the break-out to landline/mobile phones.

You are definately right with regards service providers restricting Gizmo, one Irish operator does this currently (well they say “Voice over IP).

But the good thing is, for Nokia phones with WiFi you are able to route your Gizmo calls over WiFi.

    Hai,
Could someone clarify if the VOIP calls will work only in Wi-Fi environment or it is enough if the mobile phone has GPRS/3G??

    Hai,

Could someone clarify if the VOIP calls will work only if Wi-Fi is available along with S60 or is it enough if GPRS/3G is available with S60 in the mobile???

    Hi Venkat,

I have it working with either WLAN *or* GPRS/3G

If I take my SIM card out of the phone and try to use only WLAN, it does not seem to be able to connect, but I am trying to figure that out.

I’ll post something here or on my own blog about it.

    thanks
