YouTube mobile site unearthed

3rd party S60 applications - March 1st, 2007 - Written by Tommi Vilkamo

Symbian-Guru and Symbian-Freak found via HowardForums the YouTube Mobile site that Nokia announced back at 3GSM.

The URL apparently is “m.youtube.com”

Good detective work!

The site, however, seems to be limited to certain device models only. Symbian-Freak says it works at least on N73 and N93, but not (yet?) on N95.

I don’t have any insider info to share at this point, but stay tuned…

Update: the demo, viewable with any browser, is available here (via Nokia N95 blog)

On my N80, the URL opens a page with the YouTube logo followed by the word “mobile”. It also says “This page is not available.”

Correction, at least on my E61, I can only see one page of video for the Featured and Entertainment categories. All the rest is empty and the search Go button is not active.
So seems pretty much like beta, or not fully activated yet.

The same here, the “This page is not available.”-message is the only content on my E70. So E70 does not work either…

I think on the HowardForums thread we’ve discovered that you HAVE to go through the NokiaVideoLinks bookmark for it to work.

It’s also obviously not fully launched yet, as, like Cooli, I can only access Featured and Entertainment. Everything else is empty.

    Ciao

just tried on the N93, page not available.
So I went to the link for the demo, but the videos are not loading via RTSP on RealPlayer

N95 has a Video Center application that has this site included in the list. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to actually see any video from YouTube (RealPlayer got stuck).

This is of course good, but I would still rather see S60 Browser and platform evolve into the direction that Flash-based video would work as is.

I also sense potential confusion here, when Nokia is advertising N95 as “Youtube compatible”.

Looks like YouTube (Google) is checking your ISP’s (APN) host country and is directing as needed. US customers WON’T get anything but page unavailable it seems. Might be due to the silly Verizon exclusive deal YouTube did in the US. That expires end of April and I can bet it will go online for US users then. (BTW: tried on T-Mobile, Cingular and Sprint) - all failed with same message. My Germany T-Mobile SIM worked fine though)
