How should Nokia-Siemens Networks join the blog party?

General - March 1st, 2007 - Written by Tommi Vilkamo

Last week, I met Bernard Tyers, the man behind RunningWithBulls.com blog, and we had a really nice chat about blogging, wikis, web communities, and about what Nokia should do with them.

Bernard, who works for Nokia-Siemens Networks, asked a good question: should they also jump on the corporate blogging bandwagon, and if so, how? There are no easy answers, of course, but if you have any ideas, drop a comment here.

Blogs by network guys probably wouldn’t attract as many readers as our S60 blogs. I would like to highlight here, however, that you can’t measure the importance of a blog by counting the number of readers. I mean, if you have a political blog with just two readers, it might still be quite influential - if those two readers happen to be George W Bush and Vladimir Putin. Same thing with many corporate blogs, I presume.

Another aspect of this particular case (blogging about networks) is that it could be used as a tool to popularize ideas about how networking and infrastructure can be “cool” as well.

It may take a while to attract a readership, but I for one could imagine following a blog as well that provides some insightful thoughts on how the applications we can expect see as end users are largely shaped by what actually goes on in windowless, air-conditioned server farms…

    Hey Tommi,

I would surely welcome some more people blogging about wireless from the network point of view. Sometimes I feel a bit lonely ;-)
    Cheers,

This is the portal for S60 blogs, how would the Networks part fit in here?

Boom: they wouldn’t be here, I meant somewhere else.

Then sure, bring em on. It’ll be nice to get a network perspective, especially if they can shed light on the network aspects of the phone, from a dev point of view.

    Hi Tommi,

Thanks for the little mention. It was nice to meet you and have some lunch.

And thank you for getting some good comments.

OF course you are right, the networks are not visible to people and so people can’t think about them too much. (But they do have lots more flashing LEDs the the devices do :) )

Martin has been in touch with me (hello Martin-I didn’t respond to your e-mail yet because I have been abit busy-but I am doing it now!), so we’ll have a chat.

About Marcus’ comment-thanks Marcus. Can you give me any other things you would be interested in? Its useful to know what people would like to know about, as it would be a point in the right direction.

I’ll have to see what comes out of this idea and see if I can do it..it’ll be fun either way.

thanks again and see you soon (ish)

AFAIK, NET used to get step-motherly treatment at Nokia from NMP. It’s good to see both groups get along :-)
On a more serious note and sorry to jump in, one of the first topics you could blog about would be MSISDN retrieval on devices. The technicalities, limitations, future plans, etc.

It would also be interesting to hear about your take on 3G technology, HSDPA, HSUPA, the Future, the mess with worldwide 3G bands (US), the QC patent mess.

That sounds like a challenge, Tommi ;o)

I don’t think we have to be geeky about the network stuff. I think one of the important things is to make people aware of the things on their phone that need network-side support (PoC and IMS being a couple of examples) and to get people wanting and requesting the things we talk about.

I’ve wondered if this sort of blog could be started for a while, but didn’t really know what avenues to persue.

Duncan: just do it. That’s how we did it for S60.com. No need to involve everybody; just collect a small group who can:
    - set up the blog technically and aesthetically
    - be the initial bloggers

(Of course, you need permission from somebody. But don’t ask the permission from too many people)

If you are up to the challenge, I’m sure people behind S60 blogs can help!
