Shortlist of interesting S60 add-on stuff

3rd party S60 applications - February 23rd, 2007 - Written by Tommi Vilkamo

Last Friday, Hasseraze Chamamod asked kindly:

I have a nokia N73 and I would be grateful to you if you could suggest me some more extra applications that can be valuable to me

Sure thing. (sorry about the late reply)

To begin with, I have divided this shortlist of add-on applications and services to 7 categories. A couple of years ago, the category (b) 3rd party consumer apps was probably the most interesting one. For some reason, however, I find myself using stuff from the other categories, especially the (a) Nokia add-on stuff and (c) Internet stuff much more than traditional 3rd party apps. I wonder is it just me or is this a trend?

Now, let me introduce - tadadadaa:

Tommi’s shortlist of S60 add-on stuff worth interest (February 2007)

a) Nokia add-on stuff
- Smart2go a.k.a. Nokia Maps
- Nokia Podcasting
- Nokia Mobile Search (get the latest version)
- WidSets
- Barcode Reader (not that useful yet, but loads of potential)
- Download! Client a.k.a. Nokia Catalogs

b) 3rd party consumer apps
- Y-Browser
- Handy Weather
- AutoLock
- DivX player
- ShoZu
- Calcium

c) Internet stuff
- Google Reader (using desktop version and mobile version simultaneously)
- Google Maps and GMail mobile
- Yahoo! Go
- Gizmo project
- Fring
- FON

d) Enterprise software
- Nokia Intellisync Mobile Suite 8.0, especially Nokia Intellisync Wireless Email

e) Operator and other local services (for people living in Finland)
- YTV reittiopas, mobile version
- Finnish TV guide in mobile-friendly format

f) Open source apps
- Internet Radio
- OggPlay

g) Applications for industry insiders
- Screenshot 2
- Best Taskman

Curiously, operator specific applications and services are missing totally from my mobile user experience. But that’s just me, a Nokia and Internet focused guy from Finland.

Warning: if you don’t have a flat-fee plan, or a generous employer paying your bills, look out for the data charges!

Other good shortlists:
AAS: S60 3rd Edition Essentials [updated]
OSNews: Top Ten Freeware Applications for Symbian S60 3rdEdition
3-Lib: S60 3rd Edition freeware

What are your favorites? What interesting stuff did I miss from categories a…g?

Tommi, the most overlooked freeware app for S60v3, imo, is Symella. It’s Kazaa for your mobile. And it’s amazing.

Advanced Call Manager is a very useful app, allowing me to screen calls in a variety of ways, Whitelist, Blacklist, Phonebook only, etc.

Can someone send me the Barcode reader? I had to change my N73 and didn’t save the install file. Thanks.

Quickoffice, Adobe Reader, MobiPocket Reader, M!Weather, Nanika Metro, MGMaps (yahoo, msn, google maps) are some of the other apps I would recommend.

I have compiled a list of over 50 S60 apps (all categories in one-listed in alphabetical order) at http://jake61.wordpress.com/software-for-e61/

and I suggest technoblabber’s list of S60 freeware: i found many I didnt know about even after 6 months of happily using (and blogging about) my E61 you can find it here http://technoblabber.abhishta.net/freeware/

off-topic: I purchased my E61 off of eBay in the USA about 6 months ago, and now moved (back to my home country) Finland… and I looked at the prices: I can still sell it and make profit!! :)

X-plore is fantastic! The choice of font size and the memory handling is superior to S60 V3 applications and memory handling. I can open a 4 MB text file with the built in viewer with the font size of my choice. The same file cannot be opened because of the poor memory handling with The built in doc writer in my E70.

x-plore is free for now, beta 0.96 …
It is practically a s60 v3 fp1 or maybe fp2 or 3 upgrade for file management, viewing and MEMORY HANDLING!!!

    try it…

    regards: Aron

Can you PLEASE clarify how and what handset (already on the market…) will support Nokia Video Center for YouTube? E.g. N80 or N73?
What does it mean compatible with Nokia Mini map… why don’t say 3rd edition or 3rd FP1? Please Tommi, you’re my last chance to understood!

    Don’t know for sure, sorry.

    The Nokia press release says:
“YouTube videos are accessible with Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map through the new YouTube mobile site to be launched shortly. Also, YouTube video RSS feeds can now be consumed through the new Nokia Video Center application.”

“The Nokia Web Browser with Mini Map enables mobile discovery of videos in websites such as the YouTube Mobile site in a similar way as with PC web browsers”

Sounds like the forthcoming YouTube mobile site would work with all S60 3rd Edition devices.

“Nokia Video Center will be available globally in the markets where Nokia Nseries devices are sold. It will first be preinstalled in the Nokia N95 device and thereafter in most of the new Nokia Nseries devices. Nokia Video Center will also be available as download version for selected compatible S60 devices.”

I don’t know, but I think this could mean all S60 3rd edition devices.

I’m not an expert on spam filters… How should we fix it? Are there better alternatives than captcha?

Moi Tommi, you missed Jaiku from the b-category. The mobile client has been available for N73 (and other S60 3rd Ed models) already for almost four days! :-)
Jaiku turns the phone book of the S60 phones alive by showing what your contacts are doing at the moment.

I did. And plenty of other cool stuff too, from navigation apps to games. Thanks for the reminder!
