Google Reader rocks

Google Reader and its mobile version rock. I find myself using it more than any other functionality on my Nokia N73. And I love the fact that I can access the same feeds via work computer, via home computer, and via mobile. In most other RSS readers, the items are stuck in that particular client.

Now, go try it yourself - you won’t be disappointed:
- create a Google Account (if you don’t already have one)
- login to Google Reader using your desktop browser, and subscribe to your favorite feeds
- bookmark Google Reader mobile page to your S60 browser

Question: What is RSS?

Hugh MacLeod says: “When people ask me what the future of media is, I always answer, “RSS” ”

Hehheh…. For a more serious explanation, check out what BBC, SixApart, and Wikipedia say.

Question: Why do I need it?

Using an RSS reader, you’ll be able to follow 10x more websites, news, and blogs in the scarce and precious time you have. And as an additional bonus, you won’t be the last one at the watercooler to hear the news…

You should edit the posted pic if you dont’t want tones of spam on that gmail account.

Thanks Horia, I blurred the email adress. I didn’t know the spammers would decode the email adresses from pictures…

I don’t use that Gmail account currently, but maybe I will someday. So thanks again.

Thanks for the tip! This looks quite nice.

However, at home on my Mac I think I’ll be sticking with NewsFire - I absolutely love the smartfeeds feature! Basically, I define some criteria like “all posts from feeds A, B & C that have ‘S60′ in the title” and it acts as a filter so I only see posts that match those criteria.

I have some problems with the reader but I use it all the time from my n93. I use the opera browser on my phone and the reader locks up the application a lot.

    Tommi,

Congrats on finding the one of the greatest resources I’ve ever found. It’s so easy to use, and like you, I LOVE how it keeps everything in one place, so that I don’t have to read entries more than once if I’m switching back and forth from different platforms.

There are a few complaints that I have about the mobile version, I’d like to see a few more options, as well as control links at the top so I don’t have to scroll through super-long entries just to star it, but really the service is awesome.

Yeah, I heard that Google Reader has improved a lot in the last couple of months. Unfortunately, I am still addicted to Bloglines. Don’t know why… :)

To me for the RSS reader to be useful I must be able to read feeds offline. (Such as RescoNews).

Not having this functionality renders Google Reader useless to us folks without flat data plans.

I’ll have to give it a try. I’m like Antony though… I’m addicted to Bloglines!

I’ve been using the Newsgator products for a while and everything was completed when they recently released the mobile version.
    See http://www.newsgator.com

On my laptop I run NetNewsWire (that’s for Mac, they have a Windows companion too). It syncs automaticaly with my online account at Newsgator. On my Nokia E65 I run the NewsGator Go! software that also syncs with the online companion.

And I must say it really works, and it works very well.

The downside, compared to Google is that is costs but its well worth it.

Thanks Mikael, I’ll check that out.

I tried, but when installing the Newsgator Go! Java app, I got an error message “Compulsory attributes missing”.

Urgh. For the time being, I’ll stick with Google Reader.

Anyway, it’s interesting to watch all the RSS reader providers, and to speculate about who will win the race to create a perfect mobile+desktop RSS reader combo. I wish it was us (=Nokia), but Google Reader looks pretty darn strong.
