How do people really use new services on their S60?

Commentary, Multimedia, S60 News - December 11th, 2006 - Written by schwarzm

All the presentations from Nokia World are now online. There’s one in particular you should check out - Head of Software Platforms Consumer Marketing at Nokia, Esa Eerola, discussed results from the latest Smartphone 360 study. The study is something funded by S60 and is done two or three times per year.

Custom-built software is installed on a study group’s S60 device, all their device-related actions are then monitored and recorded. We find out what they’re doing, when, how, where etc.. As data plans get cheaper, devices become more powerful, and new services are offered, the results change quite noticeably each survey. Here are a few highlights from Esa Eerola’s presentation

Memory cards are getting bigger, and people are storing more stuff. That music/sounds category continues to grow, keep an eye on that movies/video category over the next couple years.

Internet on the mobile has seen an enormous surge in popularity. WLAN, flat-rate data plans, and S60’s new amazing browser have to be responsible for this.

Very good news for developers - tens of millions of S60 devices out there, half of users are installing add-on apps.

Throw away your mp3 players, all you need is your S60. And as you could guess, music player usage is up during commutes to and from work.

If you have a camera, you’re using it.

Is there any chance i can apply to be “studied”? Any website to apply, or do you do that internally?

I looked into this - Unfortunately, the study groups are selected depending on the operator. People are randomly asked to participate in the study from various operators, we’re unable to hand-pick people.
