2D Barcode Reader for Nokia N73 and N80, get it now!
Hi all!
Tommi said:
Now, we are finally about to put Nokia’s Barcode Reader application under N80 and N73 support pages, and to the Download! client.

And here it is, my early Christmas present for all Nokia N73 and N80 users! Just start the Download! application (called Catalogs in N80) and you’ll find the Barcode reader right there.
Once you’re done, scan the code on your right ![]()
(If you are not able to scan the code: have a Merry Christmas and an interesting New Year 2007!)
Update 19.01.2007: Because of installation problems with certain Nokia N73 versions we decided to remove the download from Download! for the time being. Barcode reader for N73 will become again available as soon as there is a N73 firmware update deployed that corrects the problems. Sorry for this, I’ll let you know as soon as it’s back up!
Cheers,
Jukka

it’s the same app like I use in n93?
Jukka, have a merry little christmas, too
Blackall, yes it is. Some differences because of AF optics etc. but they are quite minor.
Lol right back at ya Jukka!!
When I try to install on my N73 I get the error, “Unable to install. Component is built in” Any thoughts?
it works well on my n80! when it will be avaiable on support pages?? or how can i get istallation file from “download!”?? using download! i can install it, but i can’t save installation file..

btw thanks fot info mate…
my n73 does not have a download! folder
i am from australia
Artin
@Alex: then you have it already installed.
@saxen: It should be available in Support pages at some point, but that’s beyond me. I’ll let you know!
@artin: Go and update your phone in a service point or via NSU (http://europe.nokia.com/A4176089?N73). Or wait until it’s available at nokia.com.
This is great! (N80 user)
I’ve tried several other barcode readers for the N80 and generally been frustrated and unimpressed. The Nokia Barcode reader rocks!
Jukka, those are amazing news for us at Semapedia.org! Truly an early Christmas treat
Best wishes,
Alexis
Great! Thanks Jukka
Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas Too
That’s pretty cool. Thanks. Have a great Christmas.
This was fun!
Thanks for posting it, and happy holidays!
Great. Thanks Jukka. It’s nice to get presents!
Happy Holiday All.
@jukka - i tried to update my n73 via NSU but none available for my type of n73.
Artin
Hey,
I really want to see the nokia barcode app on my N80i, but I’m getting always the message “Some catalogs are missing due to download error” after a while. The only folders I have are “Nokia Software Markt” and “Nokia extra” but none of these contain the Barcode app. Any ideas how to bypass those download errors? My connection is totally solid wifi.
Appreciate it,
Stna
I’ve a N73 and I also get “Unable to install. Component is built in”. But I cannot find it anywhere in the phone menu. The phone is completely new. I got another N73 (same Softwareversion) which installed the Barcodereader without any problem.
Any ideas?
Alex2
Alex2, I haven’t been able to find it anywhere on my phone either.
@artin, you can either go to a service point to get it updated or wait until Barcode reader becomes available in Support pages.
@Stan: Catalogs problems are also beyond me, but I’ll forward your issue to Catalogs folks.
@Alex & Alex2: this sounds like a problem with the firmware (some part of the Barcode reader is actually there on ROM). This might be solved by firmware update, but I’m not sure.
@jukka - thanks jukka! could you leave me in the direction of the support pages so i can keep checking back.
thanks artin
@jukka I think that’s the reason. Ive a 49.01 N73 and hope I will get a runnig version soon. Barcode was one of the reasons for me to get a N73 now.
@Artin: for Europe the page should be:
http://europe.nokia.com/A4162158
@alex2: 49.01 is not the software version but the language code. What’s the first row of numbers when you enter *#0000#? I’ll check this once the holiday season is over..
@jukka - thanks mate!
i have the same trouble as alex2, -component built in-
V 2.0628.0.0.1
10-07-2006
RM-133
Nokia N73 (B4.02)
@jukka Sorry, I was a bit to fast
49.01 is the product variant. So here’s the full version information:
V 3.0638.0.0.1
30-10-06
RM-133
Nokia N73 (49.01)
It’s the actual version for my phone.
Thanks!
Alex2
Looks like we have a problem with N73. I’ve updated the post. I fear this cannot be solved without a new firmware update.
Hi Jukka
Worked very well on my N73. Thanks!
Noel from Mumbai, India
@Noel What is the version (*#0000#) of your phone?
Got it working. When opening the Download! application it requested for permission to update the application and after doing it the barcode reader was there in the grid. Worked like a charm.
I have a scandinavian N73 turned into N73 ME.
thanks its a really nice software
Working fine on my N73 with firmware 3.068.0.0.1 (30-10-2006, RM-133, Nokia N73 (03))
I am having the same problem as Alex, it says BUILT-IN? Can any1 help?
mcmxc, all: This issue is being investigated, sorry to say there is nothing at the moment you can do to get it working.
Thanks Jukka Eklund, please let us know when this issue is resolved.
molto bello
Hi all, the N73 version is now available also on the support pages:
http://europe.nokia.com/A4162158
I tried to install the barcode reader from http://europe.nokia.com/A4162158, but got the same “component is built-in” error on my n73.
thanks
Yeah same thing happen to me
Hello, I have similar (patented) system. You can shoot the code and the provider of code can GET REVENUE from use. There are tens of possible uses, from selling media to paying in public transportation. More info is at http://www.1kod.cz/press/ . Anyone is welcome for cooperation. I also have second patent - allowing to pay by just approaching bluetooth or wifi or RFID transmitter. Jan
Hi, N80 user. I’ve tried a few barcode apps already, but that’s the first one using non-proprietary code (which is great). But it seemed to me to be somewhat unreliable. Although it read with ease every code generated at the Kaywa page, it had a lot of pain to read codes found randomly at the web (QRcodes, only). Even the sample at the post above it couldn’t read.
thanks
Any chance of getting this up and running on my E70?
It only says “unsupported phone” upon installation…
Lars, sorry but answer is no at this time.
Too bad! I hope that answer will change some time soon, as snapping photos of business cards was one of the reasons I chose a business phone with cam - even though OCR has to be done off-board sadly. Now, the 2D Barcode Reader would be a real treat, provided more and more business cards utilize QRcodes in the near future! A sensible business feature for the top of the line Nokia business handset, I’d say…
Lars, it makes sense I agree. But we’ll have to wait for the devices to have better cameras to get a sensible user experience. At the moment the code would have to be bigger than the business card to be able to read with E70 camera.
You could try for example UpCode application at the moment to try it out.
Jukka, your compassion is appreciated and thanks for the hint at UpCode (although they seem to use proprietary barcode technology like http://www.shotcode.com, instead of QRcodes).
Just want to point out that the Kaywa Reader seems to make do with even older camera technology (although I couldn’t give it a try yet, due to lack of support for S60 3rd…): http://reader.kaywa.com/en
Yep, I’m also waiting for Kaywa Reader for 3rd Edition (promised for January). It’s very impressive.
UpCode supports standard Datamatrix codes, don’t they?
Hi
What barcode symbologies does this support.
I just tried code 3of9 and no luck
Craig, EAN and UPC codes are supported but not Code39. In practice 1-dimensional barcodes don’t decode easily. I also wonder what is the use case of reading a 1D code since the number is already written there below the code. If there was a server that would return something meaningful about the code, that’s a different thing.
I can`t make this work. I switch to focus mode … aim at the barcodes for almost 5 minutes and nothing reads. Only once I survived to read barcode dunno how. The light is good. Btw can you read barcodes from monitor ? The screen flickes it is possible to read barcode from monitor ? Anyway I can`t even barcodes from paper
Dear Nokia N80 user: what kind of code are you trying to read (1D or 2D, size)?
Reading from monitor should be ok, I tried the code on this page with N80 read from typical LCD screen just fine.
Hi Jukka,
have given Scanlife Version 3.0QR a try (which is available from Nokia Taiwan) and the results are very impressive, even with the dingy 2MP fix-focus cam of my E70 from LCD screen - so it can be done ;)!
Now I just wish the Business Card Reader for N73 listed there would work as well…
By the way: You might be right that UpCode uses DataMatrix, although I couldn’t find any clear spec on that - in any case, their reader does not come close anywhere near Scanlife on the E70.
Cheers,
Lars
Hi Jukka,
yep, UpCode does grok DataMatrix as I could test using Semafox (http://sohne.net/projects/semafox).
Albeit a general UI sluggishness the actual recognition is pretty good, so I have to ameliorate my statement made earlier in comparison to Scanlife (which does not seem to support DataMatrix in the version I have available, sadly…).
One major benefit of QRcodes still seems to be the support for vCards (http://www.pukupi.com/tools/codeatron), at least I have so far not found any possibility of creating DataMatrix codes with directly embedded vCards.
Regards,
Lars
Hi Lars, you are really into this stuff it’s great
I don’t think it matters in DM or QRcode what is the content, so if we made our reader natively support vCard it would work with both codes.
BTW, about Scanlife I couldn’t get it decently working in any of my devices (I don’t have E70). It’s probably to do with the camera viewfinder which has to be somewhat tuned for each device.
I’m yet another N73 user, with v3.0638.0.0.30 and the “built-in” problem. (Not “AOLing”, just subscribing to this entry so I’ll get updates.)
For DM and QR codes generation try also at

Just noticed Kaywa Reader is now available for some S60 3rd Edition devices:

We need more barcode forums
Any info related to the barcode ads for mobile phones. the only info I fount was here
Thanks for very useful tool!
I would not recommend ScanLife at all!
I recommend the mobile scanners in the following order:
1. QuickMark - Fast scanning and read everything I’ve encountered.
2. Kaywa - Fast scanning. However, doesn’t read the phone number from vCard but everything else… O.o Why?
3. ScanLife - Doesn’t scan that fast and has trouble scanning anything too complicated such as a vCard.
4. UpCode - Slow scanning; you need to have patience to keep trying. Doesn’t recognize much. However, does support horizontal barcodes.
All of the above was tried on my Nokia N76. Not sure if problems were model specific, but I doubt it.
Looks like Adobe is starting to include barcodes in their products. This will help developers design with 2d barcode information.
For scanning UPC and EANs on N73, N95, N78, N82 try ZebraScan at http://www.annotatio.de .
It’s free and I just released a new version.
In addition to scanning it will look up the product name and connect you to Google, Ebay, Amazon to find where you can buy the product and what the current price is.
gooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood
