WLAN Wizard for N80 Internet Edition

Nokia S60 applications - November 6th, 2006 - Written by Tommi Vilkamo

WLAN_Wizard.PNG

Our little WLAN Wizard application is getting press all over the Internet: see e61life, Mike Rowehl: This is Mobility, AAS, Nokia NSeries, N80 Geek, and Symbian Watch. Thanks for your feedback, and for spreading the word!

Download the WLAN Wizard from here. Official description:

Is there a WLAN network out there? The WLAN Wizard will tell you, store it and launch it for you! WLAN Wizard shows the available WLANs in the range of N80 Internet Edition directly on the idle screen and it is possible to start web browsing immediately. WLAN Wizard also automatically creates the needed WLAN settings making WLAN usage extremely easy.

Sounds good, doesn’t it?

Now, quite a many people seem to be confused, as the application does not show anything on their active standby/idle screen. Well, it does, but only with N80 Internet Edition. The application does work with all WLAN-enabled S60 3rd Edition devices, only the indicator isn’t shown in active standby. The good news is that we can make it work properly also with other devices, but not as a sis file installation. Let’s see if you could get some surprises in software updates in the near future ;-)
How do you like the application yourself? Drop a comment, and I’ll make sure the developers hear your feedback.

Note: the application might appear on different folders, depending on your device. Check “Internet”, “My Own”, “Applications”, or “Extras”. I’m not sure which folder is the right one for which device.

    great news
that was exactly what i thought when i installed the wizard on my e61 - i even checked for a new firmware update…

It would be great if you could choose the web browser the app would load when you choose to connect via an available WLAN. Just add a setting option, choose default browser or installed browser such as Opera or Opera mini. Now THAT would be great, even more than having the application show on the idle screen.

i’m confused. will the regular n80 eventually work like the n80i or not? i would buy the n80i today, but it is nowhere to be found, at least in finland. i’d buy the regular n80 if i’d know that eventually it can be upgraded to whatever the n80i is.

This is great, just what I was looking for to replace the hotspot finder which expired ages ago for me.

I guess it would be kind of nice to see some information on active standby, but what I’d really like is to be able to record a history of the APs it sees and when (even possibly store the mobile cell information so you can say ‘it might be around here somewhere’).

The thing that I would really like more than anything else is to be able to tell the phone to use any access point it can, even open ones which don’t have profiles on my phone, and to add those options to the VoIP and browser connection options.

Great for those who bought the original N80 for lots of hundreds of euros, and they don’t get these cool features.

Why does Nokia let users update their phone, if they only get what they don’t really need? (I won’t buy apps just because Nokia forces me to have Catalogs. I don’t need games. I don’t need a wireless keyboard driver ’till a hungarian keyboard don’t come out, etc.)

I’ll never buy a new PC just to have 3 new apps. Nokia thinks that ppl will buy a new mobile for 3 new apps? Or that they’ll be happy with their old N80, and dreaming about the N80i’s new features?

Are you talking about Multimedia Computers? Than please let me manage my MC, my apps. And be no evil.

Seems like this would be pretty hard on batteries.

Great that you cleared this up. Even though it doesn’t make a lot of sense :)

I like that idea and the application. Should have been on board from beginning!
Would be great to get this through a firmware update.. would be even more great if the new browser is included too ;-)

great app….i hope to have on my “normal” n80 with the next firmware update…!!
it’s already installad on n93 with new firmware v20.xx…it works well, idle indicator is very cool!! :D

This would be a GREAT addition to my loved E61!! Flat rate 3G is enough for me for communication here in Finland, but international roaming is just too expensive to use it a lot…

It would be great to see when I have an open hotspot to use while traveling!

Put an option to sort the networks by their “Signal Strength”

Thanks everybody for your feedback! Good to hear that you liked it. Some quick comments about the rants:

    > will the regular n80 eventually work like the n80i or not?

Honestly, I don’t know. Default answer is no.

    > Seems like this would be pretty hard on batteries.

    I haven’t heard any complaints.

    > be no evil.

Sorry, we can’t help it. Being evil is in our very nature.

On another note, what theme is that? Looks neat

Nokia definitely should make a present to the E61 users that showed up to be quite active and loving there cell phone..

  15. Flash wrote

omg is present the word for the thing, that you get during christmas time? :-D

My roommate could not get our home WLAN working on his N80 before installing this program, so I guess it does its job :)
However, he thought N80 was so crappy and unstable he got rid of it.

    WLAN Wizard

Can it set the WLAN access sharing with a PDA by N80 IR interface?

Coz, I would like to use N80 WLAN access point shared to my PDA, there is only IR on my PDA.

I just installed on my all new E60.
It installs OK, and it is listed in the Tools/Application Management section.

But I cannot find a way to start the application !!

I understand that it will not show up in the stand by screen, but my first WLAN tests really show the need for this small gem.

Any one as an idea or already installed on a E60 before ?

Would WLAN Wizard for N80 Internet Edition work on regular N80? Is it just a matter of downloading it and installing or should I wait for a future firmware update from Nokia?

  22. Tommi Vilkamo wrote

Thiago: it works partly; you just can’t get the active idle notification in N80 “regular”.

Anyway, they say that you can already upgrade your regular N80 to N80 IE officially, if you want.

This is probably the best utility yet. I hope the “full” version for the N91 will appear soon.

    OFF

The wlan wizard is work, only one thing is bad: cannot displayed in active standby!

    N80ie: Symbian 9.1 S60
    N91: Symbian 9.1 S60
    Whats the different?

  28. Hilko wrote

    Hi,

The operating system is the same, however the firmware that Nokia installs on the devices is different. Route66 mobile 7 works on the N91 if you need navigation software.

    Greetz,
