Updates available for all E-series devices out there, i.e. E50, E60, E61, and E70.

UPDATE!! According to the comments, the firmware update somehow seems to kill E70. Ouch… Somebody from Nokia: please take a look at this…

Just tested it with the E70 (Firmware 1.0610.05.06) and the phone got stuck in test mode (was visible on the phone screen). Now it can’t boot-up anymore :( - Nokia logo apears for a few sec and goes away.. looping. Any way to fix this?

  2. Tommi Vilkamo wrote

    Oh, that sucks.

I really don’t know what you should do, but here’s an idea. Jukka once told me that you can do a real “format C:” by keeping the key combination “3″ + green + asterisk pressed while phone is booting. After that, you could try the firmware update again.

Do it with your own risk - please don’t kill me if it doesn’t work…

  3. jep wrote

    Same happend to me, ouch!
    Back to T39.

  4. Jukka wrote

Ouch, indeed :( Does the “format C:” help in your case?

Wayhay, ….. screech! Err… I was heading gung-ho for the update for my E70 and then skidded to a halt. Anybody actually *successfully* flashed an E70? When I connect mine, it says ‘no updates available’, even though it’s not a network-locked unit….. Wierd…

Same thing happened to me. Any way around this except going to the support center?

Luckily I saw the comments here before I did the actual update (for which you need a Windows machine anyway so I wasn’t able to do this right away anyway :)).

Are there going to be release notes for the new firmware?

Let’s hope that Nokia can quickly pull the E70 update. I hope the won’t end up with heaps of those machines at their repair centers and close down the online update service…

    Hi guys.
I had a problem with update too.
    My device is E60.

It stopped at stage when I got message Updating software (after download). Phone screen faded out slowly. I thought it died. Connection between PC and PHONE lost. Bit later I got message from software: “Software update failed. Do you want to try update it again?”
After no signs of life I disconnected my phone. Still “dead”. After removing battrey for a few secs it switched on normally and there was still old firmware on the phone.

Tried procedure for couple of times. Same effect.

Then I decided to REMOVE SIM and tryed again from beginning. It started normally as previously. Tired of waiting and watching I left my phone alone with SoftUpdate Tool.
When I came back after few minutes, it was restarting and SU tool said something like this: “Phone succesfully updated, and you can use it.”

    Nice. Happy End.

My advice to remove a SIM card and try update in Offline state.

    P.S. Sorry for my english…

Just upgraded my Nokia E60 with no issues, had to use Windows XP to do it though.

It would have been nice to have a warning like that: “You mobile is configured for SPANISH and this upgrade is ENGLISH ONLY” ….. now I have an english phone that writes english…. nice … ;)

If your phone loops boot screen try to switch it on without SIM, then with SIM but OFFLINE, then switch to General.

How can you select OFFLINE mode when the phone is just looping?

Anyway, two broken E70’s here as well.

I installed software updater for my Nokia E60 yesterday. I checked and it found no updates. Today I tried again, it didn’t find anything new but now it had an option to re-install firmware. Yesterday there wasn’t such option available. Anybody tried re-installing?

  18. Alexander Balakersky wrote

I have updated my E61 very successfuly yesterday. However, now reading about all the E70 horror stories, next time I’ll be waiting for a while until I see a lot of successful updates.
Anyway, everything seems to be fine. No major gripes, and actually VOIP is working much better with Gizmo then it was on the original firmware.
There is just one thing. Nokia, who was the @#$% that decided that on a smart phone that user should be able to use one-handed, it would be a good idea to create shortcuts that require 2 handed use. I am talking about Menu shortcuts. They have changed from just pressing a number key, to HOLDING DOWN blue arrow key and then pressing number key. That is crazy.
Nokia, are you listening? Please get this fixed. Nokia should take usability lessons from Palm. No matter how much I don’t like Treo (all of them), one-handed usability is fantastic.
Sorry to rant like that, but I got really @#$$% when I found this on my new firmware.

    THanks

  20. frustrated wrote

I really do wonder why they release software that have definetly NOT passed any functionality testing? Why Nokia why? Why you are using end-users as beta testers? You want us to buy Sony-Ericsson instead?

  21. Bart wrote

Sure this an awkward situation but give them a bit of a break. They are new to this and I for one really, really welcome this ‘do it yourself’ upgrade process. One of problems of Nokia when comparing them to similar offerings from, for example, SonyEricsson was the firmware update policy. With phones that have complete operating systems on them (like the S60 phones) quick and easy updates are imperative. Nokia is currently working to facilitate that and I whole heartily welcome this effort.

What does disappoint me though is that the E70 update is still available online. You would almost think that the support people are all a bit masochistic :) All those poor E70s will need to be reflashed at Nokia…

  22. JP wrote

Give them a break? They’re supplying firmware that is killing E70 phones, even after the problem has been identified!!! These are business phones, meaning the people who own them use them, and rely heavily on them. It’s very sad that they’d release anything so spotty for public use, but to not immediately realize they’re going to be leaving lots of business customers without any means of e-mail or phone access is just plan awful, and totally unacceptable to any customer dishing out $450 or so for a cutting-edge smartphone. Not to mention it’s a real killer for brand loyalty…

  23. te wrote

I re-installed the same firmware on my E50 yesterday without any problem, didn’t have to change the profile to Offline or anything - it just worked. I was having a problem where it kept losing the timezone it was in on reboot with autoupdate enabled, reflashing it seems to have fixed the problem.

  24. SP wrote

It seems, that the updated fw is not available any more. No more killed phones…

  25. Tommi Vilkamo wrote

Urgh. Thanks everybody for posting comments and clarifying the situation. I hope Nokia will fix this asap. I can’t personally help you much, but here’s what I think:

Well E 60 firmware update went well (I mean
    phone still works) but:
-what’s for? (haven’t seen any difference,
    improvement from before)
-some programs even if backed-up did not
work anymore on roll back and I had to re-install
    from scratch…

  29. Jukka Eklund wrote

Renato, did you have your apps installed on phone memory or memory card? I think if you have them on card, backup doesn’t work often. I don’t know if that’s something that could fixed or do we just have to live with it.

  30. Bart van Bragt wrote

Quite a few small issues have been fixed, VoIP (well, SIP :\) voice quality has been improved quite a bit, wifi support has been improved. The most important change for me is battery life though. The max that I could do on one charge was approx 60 hours, without 3G and without bluetooth. I updated last week, charged last thursday and the battery is still on 3 bars now (more than 60 hours later). This includes 3G and Bluetooth and also use of those features and wifi. Pretty impressive improvement. Battery life was my main disapointment with my E70.

  31. Vic wrote

Hi, does the firmware update speed up the E50 interface?

  32. srin wrote

I’ve just tried to update my E70 and the computer lost
connection with the phone near the end of the update, at which point the
screen had ‘test’ and other such words in different sizes of writing.
The computer said to remove the battery, which I did, but on replacing
it the phone no longer works and continually reboots itself (the word
NOKIA appears, then flashes, then it looks like it reboots).

And whilst reading this, this error has just appeared on the computer
    screen:

“Nokia Service Layer Host Process has encountered a problem and needs to
    close”

  33. Tommi Vilkamo wrote

Srin: ouch. If you can’t get it reflashed, I can’t think of anything else than taking it to a service center.

    Oh,
still no e-series… It’s strange that bussiness phones are the last ones to get that!!! Specially knowing that there’s trouble with the firmware on the e-series on sale! (and that you can’t install blackberry connect without an updated firmware …)

Any “”planned”" release date for e-series software update?

    Cheers,
    Marc.

my guess is that they add the phones as updates become available for them

software from these symbian sites (s-gear,s-one) somehow just cant be installed on my N91 … why ?

  7. Tommi Vilkamo wrote

Abhishek, you are probably trying to install old Series 60 applications to your N91. They don’t work as such in S60 3rd Edition devices, such as N91. The application catalogue for S60 3rd Edition is growing pretty fast - here’s a good starting point: http://my-symbian.com/main/index6.php?cat=6

Has anyone got the latest version of the software updater app working on their PC? I installed the latest version 1.08.08 I think and the app starts and just waits at the “starting application” message. One can’t even shut it down without the task manager. There is another process running in the background which screws up the entire PC, some nslxxxxx.exe

    Boom

Finally got SW updater working. For some reason it would not work on my laptop, may be firewall or AV utilities were causing problems. I tried it on our server and it worked in a shot.

Updated my N91 and 6681, pretty cool!!!
