Using WMA and MTP to save memory space

Music - April 23rd, 2006 - Written by Jukka Eklund

Here is a tip that saved one boring flight for me. Well, at least almost..

Like you may already know many of the recent 3rd Edition devices from Nokia can talk directly with Windows Media Player using a special mode selected when connecting the USB cable. This makes syncing music from PC to phone extremely simple, and even fully automatic if desired.

Back when I was using Nokia 3250, I had a very small memory card in it and it had almost no space free. I wanted to get one particular album from my laptop to phone for listening, but when I tried to sync it ran out of memory almost immediately. That puzzled me for a while, but then I noticed the album was MP3 running at 320kbps, as in huge!

The solution: switch one setting in WMP, so that it converts music to WMA before syncing it to phone. Look on the picture below (click to zoom in), the default setting for Music quality is ‘automatic’. Since Nokia devices report to WMP (through MTP protocol) being able to play MP3, WMP doesn’t think about converting before copying. Switch it to manual, and select bitrate. Now WMP is forced to convert to WMA at the specified bitrate. My album went from 90MB down to 27MB, sweet ain’t it?

Compatability note: this tip applies to following current Nokia models: 3250, N71, N80, N92 and N91.

Jukka, according to your experience, what is optimal bitrate for 3250 and N91? What I mean is we still have small file without compromising quality of the song. Using 320 kbps is, of course, too huge.

I believe those phones also support AAC and Ogg, which easily play on any operating system. They can also be played on older S60 phones with OggPlay.

While it may be easier for some people to use WMP I think it’s more efficient and portable to convert music to a more open standard such as Ogg. The program dbPowerAmp is very good at converting between formats.

Antony, you mean WMA? 48k or 64k is just fine. I think 64k should be high enough quality (if the original is good enough).

Dr, you can rip to WMA with Windows Media Player for example. Check settings (Tools->Options->Rip music), select WMA as format and 64kbps (or 48kbps) as quality. Rip your CD, and copy tracks to memory card.
