S60 Plug and Play USB Connection

Applications - December 20th, 2005 - Written by left_blank

S60 PC suite has developed a lot from the early days. I can be honest, it was quite a nightmare, ate all PC resources and connection via IR, Bluetooth worked when there were no clouds over Manhattan and lot’s of northern lights in Rovaniemi or maybe successful connection was related to some other things – I never figured it out.

Fortunately things have changed. PC Suite is very good for synchronizing contacts and calendar and taking backups. But I have even better news!

S60 3rd Edition will provide new connectivity functionality. You can plug your S60 phone via USB cable to PC and PC with Windows XP will recognize the phone without extra installation of drivers, PC Suite or checking Aurora Borealis situation in Rovaniemi. You can see S60 phone internal memory and memory card via PC’s file explorer, just drag and drop files between the devices. Transferring music and pictures between PC and phone becomes much easier.

Sounds quite small step, yes, but this opens new opportunities and makes life easier. I come back to “no income year” again. Internet café, internet place, is a very global phenomenon. You can walk to internet café in Kerala, India. You find internet booths (less cockroaches and faster connection) from Christchurch, New Zealand. PC is having always Windows operating system and USB and broadband connection to internet. You can upload your pictures from camera or burn a picture CD.

If we really think using mobile phone as a camera or camcorder, there has to be easy on the way to get the material out from the memory card and free the space for new pictures and videos. People usually don’t carry PC with them on holidays. For example Nokia N90 positioning is more like a camcorder with mobile phone functions than a mobile phone with camera. I’m sure that on holidays you will run out for memory card very soon regardless of the memory card size. Only viable way to record lots of video is to go to internet café and burn movies to CD. I can guarantee one thing. PC suite is not installed to PCs out there. Plug and play USB connection is the solution.

One correction to the article. Windows exprorer shows the phone memory card (not internal memory) and you can transfer files between memory card and PC. This feature is based on USB mass storage device class.
